WORLDS WORST AMERICAN MUSCLE REVIEW: STADIUM SLACKER ROCK OR CRAP STYLE MUSIC???

BEFORE WE GET INTO THINGS. I wrote most of this blog a couple weeks ago but I’m jumping back in to get some plugs out of the way up front. Were touring with White Reaper for like all of October through the midwest and east coast. Some of those shows are sold out and low tickets so I would get on that now if you want to come and see us. After that we will make our triumphant return to the West Coast wit Rocket. Those shows are in November and you really gotta come out and say what up. Also as I’m writing this our Audiotree is out so go leave some nice comments on that and all that thank you. tickets for tour under the tour tab on the Site. Like always I did not proof read this blog and there is probably a bunch of errors and things I forgot to mention so call me out in the comments.

Whats up worst world, I hope you have all been having a kick ass summer. we just finished up our east coast tour and its time to blog again. I might do another blog review of the July tour but ill get back to that. thanks to anyone who showed up/bought merchandise/played a show/ let us stay with us or even told us we “had a cool sound”. Big shout out to the Shallowater gang. it was an honor to see them play every night. their new album is amazing and remember you heard it here first. On the first Will Oldham records/palace music stuff the backing band was Slint, Shallowater actually sounds like that fact. Interesting noisey rock music mixed with the fact that they are actual cowboys. But enough about the good ole days, lets get into the meat of things..

The new album as been out a little over a month and I’m gunna do a little track by track review for y’all. lord knows pitchfork aint touching this thing. I gave the album a relisten in hopes to answer the question, It its good as shit or is it butt music??
Spoiler alert: its pretty damn good.

Worlds Worst- worlds worst

Intro track to the album, self titled song I guess ?? we’re annoying for putting out a song called worlds worst but not on the self titled album called worlds worst. but we thought it was funny so who cares. This song was probably the last one to make it to the album. As a band we played it through a couple times and tried not to over think it. This song kinda gives Happy Diving which is an influence we try to wear on our sleeves. noisey and melodic drop d rock. We recorded the album with Rocky and Cat of the legendary Levelor band. Ive always been a fan of their vocal harmonies and got Cat to see back up at the end of the song. with all ww songs, vocals sit kinda low in the mix so you gotta be observant to hear it. over all this song rocks and has been the intro to our live set since we wrote it..

Worlds Worst – Angus

Track two is Angus. This song came together from that chorus riff. I remember playing it super late one night with Jackson at our old practice spot probably after the bars closed. I had most of it done and he wanted to get a solo off at the end. I like how we often get really slow and heavy at the end of our songs but with this one we try and play it as fast as we can. when we took it to the studio rocky had all kinds of toys laying around the basement. that’s when we decided to do the shotgun sample on first chorus. Jake is really good at playing the shotgun I believe he did it in one take. This song is titled after our dear friend and ex merchant seller Liam Angus. We knew it was the single so we had to get Liam to be the star in the video. We worked with Jeremy Devine who also did the Knockout video and he said he was playing with the idea of crow birth. That gave me pause but I trust Jeremys vision and I’m glad I did. it was a super fun video and Parvis was dressed up in the crow costume all day getting embarrassed in public all for that final reveal shot. Some one in the comments said the video has David Lynch vibes which I think its partially true. I don’t see bands making videos with crow birth, and if I do I will know where they got their Inspo. overall I think this song rocks..

Worlds Worst- No I’m Not

The 3rd track on the album, No I’m not was maybe the song we’ve been sitting on the longest. I believe we played this song live when we toured with Bedridden a couple years ago. This song came together directly after I bought a Stratocaster from my buddy Doug. something about playing a different guitar will make you think of things differently. I was kind of spamming the whammy bar when we first started playing this and I’ve chilled out on that since. I took inspiration from the song Rudderless by The Lemonheads but with a classic ww twist on it. This song kinda feels punk when we play it and might be my favorite to rip live. we recorded it a little faster than we normally played it and now that’s the tempo that feels right. overall this song rocks.

Worlds Worst-Units

Units lowkey got that creepy vibe to it. that, “I got a bad feeling about this” type beat. This song has that Toner/Big Bite tone to it. chorused out drive guitars. The verse is almost post punk and the chorus explodes that sound. Recording this one was tough. when you just hear that baseline over and over again it kind of sounds like garbage after awhile. but once we started building it up, it was sounding awesome. Vocals were hard for this because I can’t sing and the melody is a little tricky in some ways. I had Jake do the scream Vox on the chorus cause I don’t have a good voice for that stuff. He’s got a good resume from his time with AndOneSLC and I think did a great job. the whole thing is pretty washed with reverb and chorus. I think the outro is about as Worlds Worst as it gets. quiet riff into huge head banger part. its always really fun to play that part live. Overall this song rocks.

Worlds Worst- Interlude

OK this one is divisive. I had been playing this riff at home on acoustic forever and didn’t know what to do with it. I think its really nice and have tried to change it into something that would be more classic “Worlds Worst”. Every time I would switch it up I would realize it was better as an acoustic track. I asked the guys if they were cool with an interlude track and they seemed down. When we recorded it we wanted to add as many layers of noise and ambience as possible. there’s one take where we just left the mic on while we walked around and cleaned up in the room. Rocky busted out the synths and noise machines and built it up. we recorded the live drums on the “chorus” with one mic across the room from the drum kit. I think this track works great in the sequencing of the album as a quiet moment between the a side and the b side. We had rocky slow the track down at the end to kind of blend it into the intro to motor mouth. over all this song is good even though I’ve had people come up and ask me why its on the record lol. its on the record cause the song is good!! it can’t all be epic riffs bro sometimes you gotta listen to chill beats and think.

Worlds Worst – Motor Mouth

It seems like you guys like this one. Its been out for over a year but was always gunna be on the record. We recorded this as a kind of tester idea to see how recording with Rocky and Cat felt. It came together so easily and came out so cool that we wanted to just get it out. The riff is still fun to play and I have not gotten sick of it so I view that as a success in my book. I think more bands should record stand alone singles without promoting a larger project. If you have a song that’s fun just put it out. you can always add it to a album or ep later. Its a good song.

Worlds Worst- Wishbone

This song is kind of our bar rock track. I think its a nice break from the big rock sound of the bulk of this record. its more like medium rock sound,. We busted out the shakers and the acoustic on this one to give it some auxiliary ambiance. The chorus is a little play on The boy by the Smashing Pumpkins one of my favorite songs by the group. Had a lot of fun with the tambourines on this one, might be something you see in future worlds worst releases. overall this song is awesome

Worlds Worst – Gas Hands

The Final Single off American Muscle, Gas Hands brings us back to that hard rock you know and love. The song is loosely based off a game I invented on tour called Gas Hands. The premise is when you get super bored driving on the highways of American you use your hand to operate the gas pedal of the vehicle. Its super dangerous and was maybe funny one time for like 3 seconds. I told my girlfriend(now fiancé, c’mon now congrats for ya boy) and she said “don’t do that, why would you do that”. I don’t condone the game but the song is roughly the idea of fucking up your life for no real reason. Soncially the riff was written shortly after our tour with Bedridden. Those freaks play a lot of interesting riffs and I think I was inspired. the “quiet” part of the song was originally a lot longer but we cut it down in the recording process which makes it flow a little better. overall this song is really good

worlds Worst – Cannonball

As we make our way into the final two songs the vibe starts to settle down. we’ve had enough hard rock its time for reflection. This song started on the acoustic and remained there. I realized that this one shouldn’t be exploded with a fuzz pedal. We still achieved a level of chaoticness with the addition of the slide guitar on the chorus. I think it creates a kind of nonstop motion feeling of being pushed back and forth. sonically this enters the kind of slow core orbit where the band had it early roots. we bravely make the step from alt rock to indie rock. playing this song live is fun because there is a good amount of baseline distortion in the live rig so it feels a little heavier than the recording. overall this song is great.

Worlds Worst – Rockets

The 10th and final song on the album. Rockets takes us to the finish line with a sensitive ass ballad. If you want to be the guy that likes the song that the band likes its this one. I remember showing it to the band and Jackson started playing the harmonic lead and we all got so stoked. This is a bit of a return to form in the way of quiet/ loud style worlds worst. I really like the cut outs between chorus and verse. coming into the second chorus I freestyled the little guitar line I played which felt cool in the moment. Rather than the super huge classic worlds worst outro we went with a very open guitar solo-y thing. I think its a pretty perfect closer to the album. has all the tell tale signs of a ww song. heavy, noisy, seasick, angry and sad. pretty cool stuff!! overall this song is awesome.

Overall this whole records rocks ass. big shout out to Rocky and Cat for helping make this. they definitely left their mark on it in an amazing way. shout out to Jake Jackson and Zach I love you guys and I’m very proud of what we made together. Shout out Malachi for giving us a bunch of gear to use in the studio. Thanks to Sam and Doug for putting this thing out on their respected labels. and thanks to you for reading this and listening to the album and caring about this band in any way.
